Food and Water Safety

Here are a few examples of the use of photonics for food, water and air analysis or treatment:

  • UV disinfection: UV light is a very interesting alternative to traditional thermal processing in the food industry for pasteurization of juices or water, meats treatment, for the treatment of food contact surfaces and to extend the shelf-life of fresh products.
  • The content of water in microbial cells can be very efficiently quantified with flow cytometry measurements. This technique consists of counting particles or cells of a certain type one by one in a jet flowing through a laser beam exciting fluorescence from biomarkers attached to that particular object of interest.
  • Near IR spectroscopy is a powerful tool for the characterization of food samples of many different types.
  • CO2 concentration, a measure of air quality, can be measured through IR absorption measurements
